Yes, I agree. The 1 in a million shot was thanks to the film industry and writers. But the romantic in me still chose to favor the happy ending.

You make a great point here but I think you are still missing mine. I cannot disagree with you in what you said there but you must be careful not to misinterpret the ending as some sort of redemption. It is not. In the end they manage to salvage the scraps of a sacred and once-beautiful thing. I think that is very sad, not uplifting. And of course the world is full of beauty, we wouldn't be able to live otherwise, but its unfortunate that there are still degenerates out there trying to deprive others of their natural right to enjoy it. Lastly, I agree with you on the 'love conquers all' thing. Of course it does. But look at the film carefully, it wasn't love that conquered all, it was a 1 in a million shot of luck.

It is still a happy ending because no one is innocent, beauty fades but their love (with the help of a bit of movie magic) always remained. He loved he no matter whether she was ugly, a virgin or a rich woman and that is beautiful in itself. Unconditional love is all we really have in this world after it takes a toll on everything else in our lives. Yes, the world is an ugly place but if that is all that you see, brother you are missing out on all the beautiful things around you at all times. I believe that a person living in the ghetto of DC or slums of Mumbai can live out a very happy life if they find that someone to share it with. I think that is what you missed in this great film. That is exactly why the director chose to show all the horrible injustices that people have to live with in that part of the world, to strengthen the point that true love conquers all.
